Three Day Workshop

August 23rd - 25th, 2024

9:00 am to 4:00 pm

We invite you to seize this exclusive opportunity to learn from OPA Master Artist Robert Johnson. There are a few artists that have impacted my artistic life. One of them is Robert Johnson. His book, On Becoming a Painter, inspired me to pursue my passions. He truly is a Master Oil Painter, and I am honored to have him teach at PFA Studio.

This oil painting workshop will delve into the profound understanding of the essential elements of painting, a wisdom passed on through the centuries from teacher to student, master to apprentice, and artist to artist.

Brush strokes will be heavily emphasized as a means to depict form, achieve expressive power, and maintain a painting's feeling of spontaneity and life. Robert will teach the importance of understanding values, edges, light, and color to create a powerful and memorable painting. Still-life and florals will be the workshop's subject matter and the focus of Robert's demonstrations.

Students are required to bring their own supplies.

It is never too early or too late to learn more about color! In this workshop, students will explore color theory and color mixing, learning about pigments and their attributes, modern vs. mineral, transparency and opacity, and the color within the color.

Join us for a Five Day Workshop taught by Award Winning Artist Susan Diehl.

When: Sept 4th - Sept 8th,  9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Artists Reception at home of Jamie Lightfoot, Sept. 6th, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

All levels are welcome. Susan will be working with oil paint but all painting mediums are welcome.

The workshop will emphasize identifying the color value, intensity, and temperature of color but mostly how to see and identify it for mixing purposes.

Other topics will include color perspective, concepts for creating the illusion of space, mixing techniques, and mediums that create color effects.

Most of the first three days will be spent seated at tables in a hands-on learning environment, mixing color combinations and ranges. The goal is to study a practical way of thinking about discovery and invention in color mixing, i.e., seeing a color, conceptualizing a color, and then knowing how to mix it. Students will acquire techniques and ways to think to fill their color needs, which, through use, will become fluid and subconscious.

Students will paint simple still-life objects from life for the last two days and learn to produce the desired colors, reinforcing the concepts and techniques covered in the first three days.

About Susan Diehl

I was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. My life's journey into painting began as a small girl. My sister was always reading, and I was always drawing. I studied fine art at the University of WI, but my real training began when I moved to Seattle, WA, and met my mentor, Ron Lukas, who taught in the Russian Impressionist tradition. While living in the Northwest, I met William F. Reese, who has profoundly influenced my art career.

After 12 years of painting in that part of the country, I moved with my husband, artist Doug Diehl, and our three children to Phoenix, AZ.We joke that we moved from "dust to dust," "moss to Hoss."

I have definitely had the experience of painting many different types of landscapes. I love to travel to the ocean and paint the beaches, coastlands, and mountains in autumn and winter. I love to paint in Wisconsin when I visit my family. Deciding which motif is my favorite is virtually impossible; I am even beginning to love painting the desert.

When I am not painting the landscape, I paint still life and figures. I love to put it all together in compositions that contain figures in their environment.I believe that painting is communication without words.

The story I have to tell is simply about things that I think are visually beautiful. Whether it be a particular color combination, a pattern, a light-struck object, or a time of day, my goal is to share the beauty that I see in everyday things and grand vistas. Laundry, hanging out on the line with the sun shining through, can be as beautiful to me as the Tetons at dawn.

I hope that you will enjoy looking at my work and that my paintings allow you to have a moment when you're looking at them to think about similar times in your life when you have come across something you believe to be really beautiful.

About Henry Stinson

Henry Stinson, a renowned artist and educator, has dedicated his life to the world of art, nurturing budding talents and crafting mesmerizing works of art. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, he was drawn to the four seasons and vibrant community of the Pacific Northwest. This love for the region and a passion for outdoor painting brought him back to the place he now calls home.

With over three decades of experience as an artist, Henry's journey in art education began at Washington State University, where he embarked on his creative path. His formal training continued at the Art Institute of Seattle, but it was his four years of intense apprenticeship with Russian impressionist painter Ron Lukas that truly shaped his artistic vision.

Henry Stinson has left an indelible mark as an educator, teaching the intricate arts of drawing and painting for more than 35 years. His career has spanned various colleges and privately owned institutions, impacting countless aspiring artists. His unique gift lies in his ability to convey practical knowledge and inspire students to create vivid and captivating art on canvas.

A gifted instructor, Henry's teaching philosophy centers on helping students uncover their unique gifts and abilities through the language of art. He firmly believes in laying a strong foundation by imparting the fundamentals, enabling students to connect prior knowledge with new skills and make informed artistic decisions. His classroom is a space where experimentation replaces fear, and mistakes are celebrated as essential steps in the learning process.

Henry encourages his students to embrace the idea that art is not about perfection but about the harmonious fusion of hand, eye, and mind. He understands that true art transcends mere technique and aims to evoke emotion, fostering a deep connection between the artist and their audience.

Henry Stinson has used innovative methods to expand his students' perspectives throughout his teaching career. He challenges them to experience art physically, using their entire body to create lines and form. This unconventional approach enhances their comfort and instills the confidence needed to be fully present in the creative process. Henry guides them towards a deeper understanding of the truth in their observations by breaking preconceptions and occasionally encouraging students to experience drawing with their non-dominant hands.

Henry's passion for art and teaching is fueled by his own artistic journey, which has taught him perseverance, courage, and unwavering faith in the unseen. He constantly strives to improve his craft, never forgetting his profound influence on future artists.

As an artist, Henry Stinson's work transcends ordinary sight, capturing unique moments that linger on the edge of memory. His ability to translate these moments onto canvas has garnered recognition in the United States and abroad. His pieces grace the collections of corporate leaders and private art enthusiasts alike.

Join us for this exclusive demonstration by Brooke Borcherding. She will be painting a bouquet of flowers. You want to take advantage of this one!

Demonstration will also be available for live streaming for those who cannot make it to the studio.

Artist Statement

My recent work in acrylic is a contemporary take on traditional landscape painting and is executed on-site or in the studio. I analyze and respond to what I'm looking at with broken color mark-making to maintain a lively sense of energy and vivid color. These "deconstructions" aim to shed light on the beauty of ordered chaos in everyday scenes.

About Brooke:

Brooke is a full-time award-winning artist from Wallingford in Seattle, WA.

She began painting in high school 18 years ago in Southern California and earned a BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2010. She considers herself a self-taught landscape painter, gaining knowledge from plein air peers when she took her easel outdoors for the first time in 2009 and producing a prolific output ever since. Her unique style evolved from a desire to investigate human perception in aesthetics and stimulate our senses by exaggerating the color and space we see around us.

Over the past decade as an exhibiting artist, Brooke has become nationally and internationally collected, hangs in numerous galleries in the PNW, and most recently has been featured in the Sep 2022 issue of Plein Air Magazine for urban plein air painting. In 2019, she was featured in American Art Collector Magazine, and 2016, Southwest Art Magazine was selected as one of the "21 artists under 31" artists to watch. She was awarded a prestigious prize for best oil/acrylic painting at the 2018 Carmel Plein Air Competition in California and continues to be recognized for her unique work in a traditional fieled, earning 3rd place on Whidbey island's 2023 plein air paintout, two honorable mentions at the Edmonds plein air paintouts 2022/23. You may also find her work in various businesses or neighborhood art walks if you live in the Seattle area.

When Brooke is not making art, she's playing pinball. She's a world-ranked competitor who participates in league and local tournaments.

Please follow her work on Instagram or Facebook            @brookeborcherdingfineart.

Demonstration will also be available for live streaming for those who cannot make it to the studio.
